PocketLingo for Palm OS FAQ

....................................

What is the difference between PocketLingo MAX, PocketLingo College, and PocketLingo Pro?

For a side-by-side comparison of these three titles, please visit our special comparison page.

How can I download the product I purchased?

You should have been prompted to download the product you purchased at the time you purchased. If you weren't however, or need to redownload for any reason, the links to all of our products can be found in our product support section.

My registration code doesn't work...

  • My code doesn't fit in the space : Older PocketLingo registration codes were 8 digits long, but all newer codes are 10 digits. If you cannot fit the entire registration code in the space alotted, please make sure that you have the latest version of the product installed. You can download this from our product support section. Also, make sure that you did not accidentally insert extra spaces in the middle of your registration code.
  • PocketLingo says my code is invalid : Since PocketLingo 2.0 is one application through which all version 2 dictionaries are accessed, users should check that the title at the top of the registration screen matches the product they were given a registration key for.

HotSync hangs/times out while installing...

Because of the size of PocketLingo's data files, HotSyncing can take as long as 5-10 minutes when installing our largest products. The HotSync process will also be particularly slow when installing to an external memory card. If it completely hangs or times out however, please check for the following:

  • USB hubs : Please make sure that you are connecting your Palm cradle's USB cord directly to your computer, and that you disconnect any third party USB hub products. These hubs often cause HotSync to time out while trying to install large files (like our dictionaries).
  • IR : If at all possible, avoid installing using your Palm's IR port. This process is extremely slow and is prone to error.

The dictionary file installed successfully but it doesn't show up on my Palm...

Please note that PocketLingo 2.0 acts as one program through which you access all your 2.0 dictionaries. For example, if you purchase PocketLingo College 2.0 and Thesaurus 2.0, you will only see one PocketLingo 2.0 icon on your applications list. To switch between your various dictionaries while inside the program, just tap on the dictionary title at the bottom of the lookup screen.

If all your dictionaries are not listed when you tap on the dictionary title, please make sure that have installed the latest version of the PocketLingo2.prc file.

The "Show" button does not appear in the Study Card section...

This can happen if your MyWords file becomes corrupted or if you have added items to the MyWord list from dictionaries that are no longer loaded on your Palm. To reset the MyWord list, delete the file "PL MyWords" database from your Palm.

PocketLingo 2.0 takes a long time to start up...

If you have a lot of files on your memory card, PocketLingo may take a while to load. This is because it is searching through your memory card for dictionary files. You can speed up the load time by creating a /Palm/PocketLingo directory, and moving all of your PocketLingo 2.0 dictionary data files to this directory. If you do not have a file management tool, we recommend using the free Filez utility.

What are the different files?

All PocketLingo 2.0 packages contain the following files:

  • PocketLingo2.prc : This is the PocketLingo 2.0 program file which allows you to access all of your 2.0 dictionary files. We recommend that you install this to your device if possible, but it can be installed to an external memory card. Please make sure you have the latest version installed on your device.
  • SysZLib.prc : This is a shared system library that PocketLingo requires for reading dictionary files. This file must be installed to your device and cannot be installed to an external memory card.
  • Dictionary PDB files (such as AHD_College2.pdb or Rogets_Thesaurus2.pdb) : These files contain the data for the dictionaries you own. They can be installed to your device or to an external memory card.

HotSync Error Message: File Not Found

If you get an error saying that the file was not found when trying to add files to the Palm Install Tool, it is usually due to one of two things.

  • Windows XP zip folders : Windows XP allows you to view zip files as if they were folders. However, the Palm Install Tool will not work unless you extract the files first. To do this, right click on the zip file and click on "Extract All..." Then follow the steps in the Wizard to extract the files to a folder on your computer. Once the files are extracted to that folder, you can install them to your PDA.
  • Long file path names : The Palm Install Tool can have problems if your files are in a deeply nested folder. To get around this, create a folder C:\PocketLingo and place the PocketLingo PRC and PDB files in this directory. Then add the files from this directory to your Install Tool.

PocketLingo Error Message: Dictionary Not Found

When this happens, it is usually because there was not enough space to install the dictionary files onto your device, and so the installation failed. To check how much space is available on your device:

  1. Go to your launcher screen (where all your applications are listed) by tapping on the home button.
  2. Tap on the "App" menu and select "Info..."
  3. The free space on your device is listed near the top of the screen.

Also, make sure that have installed the latest version of the PocketLingo2.prc file.

PocketLingo Error Message: SysZLib Not Found

In order to run properly, PocketLingo 2.0 requires that you install the SysZLib.prc file directly to your device's internal memory. It cannot be placed on an external memory card.
